Ministries at MBS

If you would like to be part of one of the following ministries, please list them in the box at the bottom of this page.

AMBSThe Academy always welcomes parishioners to share their time and talent with our students.  Special events as well as ongoing activities are always in need of assistance…examples of these are co-curricula clubs, career day, library aides, lunch aides, indoor recess activities, substitute nursing services, prayer partners, etc.

Aids Ministry: The Aids ministry here at MBS consists of  raising the awareness of the members of the parish as a whole to the devastating effects of this disease with the intention to create a spirit of compassion for those inflicted with this illness, as well as their families.  Confidentiality is stressed.

Altar Servers:  Youth of our parish (grades 4 and older) receive training enabling them to serve at weekend liturgies, weddings, funerals and special liturgies throughout the Church’s liturgical year.

Bereavement: For those who have suffered the loss of a loved one, this group meets on the third Thursday evening of every month in the Parish Center at 7:30 pm.  All are welcome.

Breakfast Club:  This group of parishioners prepares and serves breakfast on the second Sunday of each month (except July and August) from 8:00 am to noon in the school cafeteria providing a social atmosphere for the parish community.  In addition, members prepare food for other parish functions and fund raisers including Breakfast with Santa, Cornerstone and the Annual Appreciation Dinner.

Church Cleaning: This group of parishioners cleans the interior of the Church on a weekly basis.

Confirmation Program: The Confirmation Preparation Program is based on helping the young people of the parish incorporate their faith into their daily lives through the gifts of the Holy Spirit.  The program continues to build the candidates understanding and knowledge of Catholic identity, as outlined in the scriptures of the New Testament and learned in Catholic School or Religious Education prior to 9th grade.  Preparation takes place within classes, service projects, and retreats during their 9th grade year, with the Sacrament of Confirmation celebrated in the spring of their 9th grade year.

Crop Walk: In October this committee organizes the parish’s participation in the CROP Walk event which helps raise money for Church World Services and other charities.  Monies are raised through sponsors whose donations are based on the miles walked by the participants.

Cursillo: Cursillo is an in-depth weekend course, which enables a person to enrich their relationship with Jesus through study, prayer and action.

Emmanuel Cancer Foundation:  The Second Sunday Food Collection is sent to the Emmanuel Cancer Foundation.  The food is distributed to families who have children with cancer.

Environment:  This group takes responsibility for enhancing the celebration of feasts and seasons of the liturgical year through decoration of the worship space.

Eucharistic Ministers:  Parishioners are commissioned by the Pastor,  in the name of the Archbishop, to distribute Holy Communion at Mass and to act as an extension of the parish’s liturgy by bringing Holy Communion to the sick and homebound.

Eva's Kitchen:  On the fourth Saturday of every month a group of parishioners prepare and serve lunch to the poor at this soup kitchen in Paterson.

First Saturday Devotion to the Blessed Mother: This group meets once a month on the first Saturday to pray the Rosary after the 9:00 am Mass.

Giving Tree:  Through this program during Advent, requests from various religious and service groups are put on ornaments on the tree in the church foyer.  Parishioners provide the gifts listed on the tags.  These Christmas gifts are given to children of all ages, people with disabilities, senior citizens and other people in need.

Inter-Religious Fellowship for the Homeless:  The Inter-Religious Fellowship for the Homeless is an ecumenical group dedicated to providing assistance and shelter for the homeless.  Services include a walk-in dinner program in Hackensack, an overflow shelter at the Presbyterian Church in Franklin Lakes and the Emergency Family Shelter in Englewood.

Lectors: These people of the parish are dedicated to proclaiming God’s word through the scripture readings and offering the petitions at Mass.

Liturgy of the Word:  This ministry for children in grades 1 through 5 takes place during the 10:30 am Sunday Mass.  During the Liturgy of the Word, children are taken to the chapel where they hear the Sunday readings adapted to their age level.  They return to the worshipping community for the Celebration of  the Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Men's Sharing Group:  This ministry meets alternate Saturday mornings at 7:00 am to discuss and meditate on the upcoming Sunday gospel reading.

Ministry of Hospitality/Ushers:  Women and men of the parish welcome members of the congregation as they arrive for Mass, assist with seating as necessary, coordinate the Offertory collection and distribute the weekly parish bulletin.

M.O.M.S. Group:  The Ministry of Mothers Sharing creates in women an awareness of our inner selves, while at the same time teaching us new ways to inspire, encourage and affirm each other.  Through the process of personal and spiritual growth, women have the opportunity to understand their values, claim their own giftedness and bring these strengths to their family relationships and to the Christian Community.  Moms meet once a month on Friday at 9:15 am in the Parish Center.

Music Ministry:  Parishioners are invited to share their musical talents to enrich all liturgical celebrations at Most Blessed Sacrament.  Currently, there are three musical ensembles:  the adult choir, the contemporary ensemble (jr. high/high school students & young adults), and the junior choir (grades 2-6).  The adult choir meets on a weekly basis.  The contemporary ensemble leads song at the 5:30 Mass on the second week of each month. Most of our contemporary ensemble members also actively participate in the Youth Stations presented during Holy Week.  The junior choir meets seasonally, leading song at the children's liturgy on Christmas Eve and the 10:30 Mass on Easter Sunday.  They also minister at the First Communion celebrations of the parish as well as on special feast days.  For rehearsal information for any of the ensembles, please contact Lauren Longo at the Parish Center.  Instrumentalists are also welcome!

Oakland Care Center:  Volunteers provide assistance to the handicapped and wheelchair-bound residents of the Oakland Care Center who wish to attend Mass.

Pre-Baptismal Program:  Members of the parish welcome and help prepare parents in an informal atmosphere for the Sacrament of Baptism.  The parents have the opportunity to meet other parents from the parish community and share in their baptismal preparation.

RCIA:  This group dedicates time to sharing the Catholic faith with those seeking to become members of the Roman Catholic Church.  Through the use of Scripture, Prayer, and Catholic Doctrines, non-baptized inquirers are led through the process of formation that leads to Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist.  The process also welcomes baptized Catholic adults who wish to complete their Initiation by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and/or Holy Eucharist.  Active adult Catholics are invited to participate as parish sponsors and team members.

Christian Initiation for Children:  Unbaptized children who are at least 12 years of age are prepared for the Sacraments of Initiation through the process known as the Order of Christian Initiation adapted for children.  Full initiation includes Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist.

Religious Education Program:  The goal of the Religious Education Program is to provide an atmosphere of joy in which each child can learn about God.  We also endeavor to develop a fuller awareness of the role of the total parish community in sharing their time, talent and faith.  More than 125 parishioners of all ages are presently involved as volunteers.  Over 750 children participate weekly in formal religious education classes on Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays.  Second-graders preparing for Reconciliation and First Eucharist have sacramental lessons during class-time, as well as special liturgies.  Older baptized children who have not received these sacraments are prepared in small groups at their own grade-level.  Children are a very important part of our parish.  Whether they attend the parish school or the weekly religious education classes, all of our children are warmly welcomed and encouraged to participate in parish activities.  On weekends at Mass the children receive their own lectionary-based children’s bulletin Kidsword and Little Kidsword.  Young people from the parish distribute these bulletins at the end of all the Masses.

Respect Life at all Stages:  These members of the parish are committed to the education and promotion of the Catholic Church’s teachings on the respect, care and protection of human life from conception to natural death.

Sacramental Linens Ministry: Members of this ministry wash and iron the corporals and purificators used during daily and weekend Masses. If you are unable to commit to six times a year, please consider being a substitute.

Thanksgiving Baskets:  Through donations of food from parishioners and school children, the parish supplies food baskets for the needy.  These baskets contain everything a family might need for Thanksgiving dinner.

Thrift Shop:  Good quality used and new clothing and bric-a-brac are collected from the parish community to be sold at the Community Thrift shop in Midland Park.  All proceeds are donated to the Sisters of Saint Joseph Retirement Fund.

Tithing the Tithe:  As part of the tithing concept, our parish sets aside ten percent of the weekly collection to help needy persons and causes that are not broadly funded.  This committee meets once a month to allocate the funds.

Youth Ministry:  Youth Ministry centers around the Blessed Life program.  Blessed Life is a weekly high school ministry program run by a Core Team of volunteer adults.  Blessed Life incorporates the eight components of Youth Ministry as set forth by the United States Catholic Conference’s document “Renewing the Vision.”  These components include: Advocacy, Catechesis, Community Life, Evangelization, Justice and Service, Leadership Development, Pastoral Care, and Prayer and Worship.  Blessed Life provides opportunities throughout the year for our young people to participate in events designed to help them; meet others within the parish, learn more about themselves, learn more about their Church, serve those in need, participate in parish life, among others.  Blessed Life also sponsors a weeklong summer mission trip, a summer music festival, Living Stations of the Cross during the Lenten Season, and participation in Archdiocesan events throughout the year.

Women's Cornerstone:  Cornerstone is an opportunity to renew and strengthen one’s faith and at the same time grow in the experience of Christian community.  It is also a way to meet and interact with other people from the parish in a warm welcoming environment on both a personal and a spiritual level.

Women of Faith: A weekly Bible Study and faith sharing opportunity is offered for women who wish to learn more about Scripture and apply it to daily living.
