E-MAIL SCAM
Please be aware of an email scam that currently is being perpetrated against parishioners in the Archdiocese of Newark.
The scam involves parishioners receiving an email supposedly from a parish priest asking for a favor. The email instructs the recipient to reply to the email, and once the parishioner responds, a follow-up email asks them to purchase gift cards or other similar items of monetary value.
Parishes in the Archdiocese of Newark have been advised to alert everyone that if such an email comes in, the recipient should not-reply to the email or provide any information. Instead, parishioners should alert their pastor, parish administrator or school administrator and law enforcement.
Thank you for your assistance with this matter.
Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R. has written a letter to the members of the Archdiocese of Newark regarding the programs that are currently in place for everyone that works with children and for the children themselves that are in use at every parish and school in the Archdiocese of Newark.
In a media announcement made on November 19, 2018, Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, C.Ss.R., announced that the Archdiocese of Newark and the Dioceses of Camden, Trenton, Paterson, and Metuchen are committed to the establishment of a Victim Compensation and Counseling Program.
